I\'ve been riding with the POC Octal MIPS helmet for several years. It\'s a great helmet as it looks cool and is well ventilated. What I don;t like is that it\' doesn\'t fit my head correctly. It\'s wide around my ears and no I don\'t have a funny shaped head. I eventually upgraded to the POC Ventral Air helmet which fits way better. John

As a proud owner of the POC Octal Mips helmet for several years now, I’ve had the opportunity to put this piece of cycling gear to the test. Like some other reviewers, I’ve found the helmet to be of good quality, even though its shape doesn’t perfectly match the contours of my head. This minor setback led me to repurpose it by attaching a light to the top, making it my go-to choice for nocturnal rides. In this comprehensive review, we’ll dive deeper into the POC Octal Mips helmet’s features, strengths, and areas for improvement.

Safety First: Meeting Australian Standards

First and foremost, safety is paramount when evaluating any helmet. Fortunately, the POC Octal Mips doesn’t fall short in this department. It’s equipped with a Mips liner, a technology designed to reduce rotational forces during an impact. Additionally, the helmet features a substantial amount of interior foam, which suggests a high level of protection. It’s reassuring to note that this helmet meets rigorous Australian safety standards. As we all know, Australians are known for not compromising on gear, and this helmet lives up to those standards.

Comfort and Fit: A Unique Blend

When it comes to comfort, the POC Octal Mips helmet offers a rather unique blend. The interior foam, while slightly thin, manages to provide a comfortable fit without creating troublesome pressure points. Adjusting the helmet to fit your head is straightforward, and the straps are surprisingly smooth – an unexpectedly delightful feature. The helmet fits snugly and exudes a reassuring aura. While the padding might be minimal, it proves to be effective during long rides. Furthermore, it caters to eyewear users with a handy feature known as the ‘Eye Garage,’ designed to keep your sunglasses secure and easily accessible.

Ventilation Excellence

One of the standout features of the POC Octal Mips helmet is its exceptional ventilation. The helmet boasts large, assertive vents and deep interior channels that promote excellent airflow. This breathability is especially valuable during intensely hot rides, ensuring that you stay cool and comfortable, even when the sun is scorching.

Aerodynamics and Size Considerations

However, no helmet is without its flaws. The POC Octal Mips, with its somewhat bulky construction and numerous vents, does compromise on aerodynamics. Its size can cause instability during windy conditions, which might deter those cyclists whose focus is on speed and precision. If you’re a rider who values aerodynamic efficiency above all else, this helmet may not be your top choice.

Lightweight and Design Aesthetics

Despite its size, the POC Octal Mips helmet is surprisingly lightweight. The North American model weighs in at around 252 grams, while others clock in just below 230 grams. Wearing it, you might forget you even have a helmet on your head.

In terms of design, aesthetics can be a matter of personal preference. The minimalist block pattern of the POC Octal Mips is sleek and iconic, which may be appealing to some riders. However, for new cyclists or those looking for a more streamlined appearance, the larger size might be a bit daunting. Although the helmet offers a variety of cool color options, some might find the bulkier size less attractive in terms of design.

The Verdict

In summary, the POC Octal Mips helmet brings a lot to the table. It offers robust safety features, superior ventilation, remarkable lightness, and a comfortable fit. However, it may need improvement in the aerodynamics department and could benefit from a more streamlined design to appeal to a broader audience. Nonetheless, it remains a decent choice, especially for those planning lengthy, sweltering rides.
